WHY SHARING DESSERT MAKES PEOPLE FEEL CLOSER
There’s a reason so many important conversations seem to happen over dessert.
Think about it. The first date that unexpectedly lasted three hours. The catch-up with a friend you haven’t seen in months. The celebration after good news. Even the conversations that begin with, “I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but…”
They’re rarely planned.
Yet somehow, a shared dessert often becomes the backdrop for moments people remember long after the plates have been cleared.
POV: What you see after you’ve confessed some questionable things to your bffl.
Maybe it’s because dessert doesn’t come with the same expectations as a formal meal. It’s usually the reward at the end. The part people genuinely look forward to. There’s less pressure, fewer distractions, and a little more room to simply enjoy the company around you.
At Drizzl’d, we’ve had a front-row seat to this for years.
Customers arrive for doughnuts, churros, coffee or a late-night treat, but what stays with them is often the experience they shared while they were here. The conversation. The laughter. The story that came out when nobody expected it.
It’s one of the reasons our Sweet Drizzl’d Confessions campaign has resonated with so many people.
When we first launched it, we thought we’d receive a few funny stories. Instead, we’ve published more than 100 anonymous confessions covering everything from awkward first dates and family drama to surprising acts of kindness and life-changing decisions.
What surprised us wasn’t the stories themselves. It was how many people connected with them.
Thousands of comments later, one thing became clear: people are constantly looking for ways to relate to one another. Sometimes all it takes is hearing a story that reminds you of your own.
In a strange way, the confessions and desserts aren’t that different.
Both bring people together.
One gives people something to share. The other gives them something to talk about.
As life becomes busier and more digital, those opportunities for genuine connection can be easy to overlook. Yet they’re often the moments we value most.
Perhaps that’s why dessert has always been more than just food.
It’s a reason to sit down a little longer. To celebrate something worth celebrating. To catch up with someone you’ve missed. To tell a story you’ve been holding onto.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what brings people closer.
