CHURROS OR HOT BALL DOUGHNUTS?
It’s a debate we’re probably not qualified to settle.
Churros or Hot Ball Doughnuts?
Both are served hot. Both can be covered, dipped or drizzled in chocolate. And both are dangerously easy to keep eating once you start.
But they’re actually very different desserts.
Churros are all about texture. Freshly cooked churros should be crispy on the outside, soft through the middle and finished with cinnamon sugar. Add a chocolate dipping sauce and there’s a reason they’ve become one of the world’s most recognisable desserts.
Hot Ball Doughnuts are a different experience.
They’re small, soft doughnut balls cooked fresh and served hot, then paired with different sauces, toppings and flavours. Unlike the doughnuts you might grab from a cabinet and take home, Hot Ball Doughnuts are at their best when they’ve just been made.
So which one should you choose?
If you’re craving something crispy, cinnamon-coated and perfect for dipping, churros probably win.
If you want something warm, soft and loaded with your favourite toppings, Hot Ball Doughnuts have a pretty convincing argument too.
At Drizzl’d in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, we serve both, so we see this decision play out all the time.
Our conclusion?
There probably isn’t a winner.
Sometimes you want churros. Sometimes you want Hot Ball Doughnuts. Sometimes you’ve had the kind of week where ordering both feels completely reasonable.
And really, that’s what dessert is supposed to be about.
